Eight novel bioactive azo dyes including electron withdrawing and electron donating groups were designed and synthesized using Knoevenagel condensation and azo coupling reactions. Chemical structure of the dyes was characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, FTIR and UV–vis spectroscopic techniques. The solvatochromic behavior of the dyes was studied in solvents with different polarity and considerable results were obtained. In addition, investigation of antibacterial activity of compounds was carried out by zone method. The activity data show that the synthesized dyes have promising antibacterial activity
