Environmental issues, including rapid global warming, have led to the establishment of strict climate laws to minimize greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, all industries, including ironmaking, are obliged to minimize the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) resulting from their processes in the future. Direct reduction iron technologies are also polluting due to the use of carbon monoxide gas (CO) in their process. In this review, the use of green hydrogen in the production of sponge iron was studied. For this purpose, the reasons for the pollution of the usual direct reduction iron industries were explained, and then green hydrogen and its production methods were introduced. Also, the flowsheet of direct reduction of iron ores with pure green hydrogen was discussed and a number of European projects that have been carried out in this field were summarized in tables.
