Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a non-toxic, fully biodegradable and environmentally friendly thermoplastic polymer. PVA has good mechanical and thermal properties due to its effective adhesion to reinforcement materials such as bagasse fibres. This makes it suitable for the manufacture of composites. It is well established and is promising for a variety of applications including consumer goods, medicine and agriculture. This article reviews the mechanical and water absorbing properties of PVA-based composites that have been studied by various researchers, some of which are discussed here. It also focuses on how different temperatures affect mechanical properties of PVA-based composites reinforced with biochar fibers.
