Ground-borne vibrations induced by propagation of surface waves due to train movement may cause discomfort to residents living nearby railways. These vibrations may also interfere with instrumentation works in hospitals, laboratories, and industries located in the proximity of these railways. Excavating a trench in the wave path is one of the conventional solutions to mitigate the train-induced vibrations. This paper aims to investigate the efficiency of trench construction as a solution to reduce the vibrations caused by train movement and the effect of various factors such as the depth, width and distance of the trench on isolation efficency of vibrations.
