Chamomile is a well-known plant from the chicory family that grows in different parts of Iran and the world and has been used as a medicinal plant since the distant past. The purpose of this study is to compare the appearance and distribution characteristics, properties and harms of chamomile types in traditional medicine and popular studies. This research is a review and library study and is based on searching in the original sources and traditional medicine books of Iran in Teb Noor software, as well as searching in various databases, such as the Iranian medical website, Magiran, SID, Elmnet, PubMed, Google. Scholar, Science Direct and Scopus were conducted in order to check the findings of new studies and at the end the findings were compared. Chamomile has different species that are mentioned in ancient medical texts and from the point of view of Islamic and Iranian sages, although they are different from each other in terms of appearance; But in terms of properties and disadvantages, they do not differ much. Chamomile widely has various therapeutic properties in traditional medicine, including the treatment of nervous, digestive, skin and hair diseases, eye diseases, women, etc. Based on common studies, we can mention the most important uses of chamomile, including antioxidant activity, soothing, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antifungal, anti-cancer, liver and kidney protection. In addition, it is useful for knee osteoarthritis, premenstrual syndrome and digestive disorders due to the presence of various nutritious compounds in different parts of the plant and its essential oil and extract. Since it is very important to identify the exact nature of medicinal plants for conducting scientific research and its results, in this article, the appearance characteristics of several species of plants that are introduced as chamomile in traditional medicine sources were compared and according to the results, The most important species of chamomile include Shirazi chamomile with the scientific name Matricaria chamomilla L. var. chamomilla, aromatic chamomile with the scientific name Matricaria chamomilla L. var. recutita, Roman chamomile with the scientific name Anthemis nobilis L. and field chamomile with the scientific name Tripleurospermum disciforme (C.A.Mey) Schultz-Bip. which have many therapeutic properties. Based on the findings of a comparative study, chamomile in traditional medicine sources and common studies jointly as a sedative in improving cardiovascular diseases, treating digestive diseases, protecting the liver and kidneys, colds, relieving colds, impotence It is used for mood disorders during menstruation, excreta solvent and diuretic, obesity treatment, skin and hair diseases, depression, insomnia, treatment of joint pain and osteoporosis, eye diseases, and oral ulcers.
