The Abhar Plain, characterized by an arid/semi-arid climate, is situated in northwestern Iran. In previous years, the Abhar Aquifer has faced a sharp drop in water level due to overdraft, mismanagement, and drought. For these reasons, it is necessary to perform artificial recharge. However, before serving any plan, suitable areas should be selected. This research deals with the zoning of the Abhar Plain for artificial recharge using the analytical hierarchy process and GIS-based methods. First, the main criteria, including groundwater quality, transmissivity, groundwater depth, distance from rivers, wells, springs, slope, geology, land use, drainage density, distance from cities, villages, rainfall, and evaporation rate were selected based on the expert perspective, previous research, access to data, and the quantity and quality of data. Then, the criteria and their classes were compared in pairs using the AHP method, and their weights were estimated. A raster map was drawn in the geographic information system for each sub-criterion in the next step. Then, the raster map of the sub-criteria was overlapped by the weighted linear combination method, and the final suitability map was obtained and classified into five categories, including very suitable (2.8% of the total area), suitable (12.98% of the total area), moderate (22.73% of the total area), less acceptable (26.3% of the total area), and unsuitable (19.35% of the total area). In the last stage, the suitability of the operating artificial recharge sites (Vistan, Khorasan-lu 1, Khorasan-lu 2, and Hidaj) was evaluated and estimated that the location of the Vistan Site is suitable, while others are in the least acceptable category. Therefore, stopping the implementation of the plan in these sites and transferring them to suitable and very suitable locations is necessary.
