Oxaliplatin is an effective chemotherapeutic medication for the treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC), however prolonged usage of it frequently leads to drug resistance. It is critical to develop methods for reducing CRC cell oxaliplatin resistance. Peganum harmala L. (P. harmala), is widely used in traditional medicine as an anticancer remedy. In present study, oxaliplatin-resistant HCT116 cells were treated with varying doses of aqueous extract derived from P. harmala seeds for 24 and 48 hours. The methylthiazol Tetrazolium (MTT) assay was used to determine cell viability. The analysis showed a significant relationship between the increase in the number of dead cells and the increase in the concentration of P.harmala’s aquaous extract. The cytotoxicity of P. harmala extract increased significantly from 24 h to 48 h in Oxaliplatin-resistant HCT116 cell line. These findings suggest that P.harmala’s aquaous extract, may be useful for treatment of drug-resistant colorectal cancer.
