Electron microscopy of materials undergoing chemical reactions provides knowledge of the underlying mechanisms. However, the reactions are often complex and cannot be fully resolved using a single method. As well as characterization of the structural properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials is very important to optimize their synthesis and application. Here, we present the electron microscopy method using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for studying the exfoliation of synthesized boron nitride nanosheets. Collectively, our data reveal that the reaction proceeds via a three-step process which leads to a significant reduction in the dimensions and thickness of the as-obtained nanosheets compared to pristine hBN
