مطالعات تطبيقي يكي از شاخه‌هاي پژوهش در متون ادبي است. از اين طريق مي‌توان ارتباط آثار ادبي ملل و زبان‌هاي مختلف را سنجيد و مشابهت‌ها و تأثيرات احتمالي آن‌ها از يكديگر را روشن ساخت. جزء از كل اثر استيو تولتز نويسنده استراليايي و بوف‌كور صادق هدايت آثاري هستند كه آن‌ها را مي‌توان در زمره آثار مدرن جاي داد. نكته‌ي قابل تأمل شباهت‌هاي بسيار نزديك برخي تصاوير و مضامين اين دو اثر است. شباهت‌هاي موجود را مي‌توان در سه حيطه‌ي ادبي، فكري و محتوايي بررسي نمود. فضاي وهم‌آلود، هراس از مرگ، يأس و نااميدي و مواردي از اين دست مهم‌ترين وجوه شباهت اين دو رمان است.
