Ionic liquid containing initiating system was used to facilitate cationic polymerization of isobutylene to conventional grade polyisobutylene (PIB) using AlCl3 initiator. Specifically, the compound from 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (IL) was employed as the simplest reference. Overall results affirmed that the designed AlCl3/IL initiator system can be used as a safer and greener alternative to the industrially used BF3 system, in developing isobutylene polymerizations to PIB for viscosity improver applications.
