Treatment of bone infections is a major orthopedic challenge due to the physiological and anatomical features of the bone. In this article, we report a biocompatible and injectable drug delivery system made of polysaccharides such as agar and alginate, and bioceramic hydroxyapatite nanoparticles. Polyvinyl alcohol was also blended with sodium alginate. These delivery systems were prepared as composite hydrogel microspheres. The effect of various percentages of nano-hydroxyapatite on the release of ciprofloxacin as a model antibiotic drug in saline phosphate buffer was investigated. Ultraviolet–Visible spectroscopy was used to obtain the concentrations of the released drug of the microspheres. The nano-hydroxyapatite containing microspheres showed a sustained drug release profile suitable for bone infection treatment with effective bioactivity.
