In this work, we improved the toughness of thermoset epoxy resins by incorporating novel ionically modified nanoparticles into polymer matrix. The nanoscale ionic modified nanoparticles, based on functionalized SiO2, and polyether amine, were successfully prepared. Afterward, these ionic nanoparticles were blended into epoxy resins by the solvent-free method to investigate the mechanical properties of the resulting nanocomposites. The results indicated that epoxy nanocomposites had better toughness, elongation, and tensile strength in the presence of ionic modified particles. The addition of 2wt% ionic nanoparticles enhanced the tensile strength and toughness by about 1.8 and 3.28 times, respectively, compared to the nanocomposite with unmodified SiO2.
