In this study novel crosslinked polyurethane (PU) coatings containing ascorbic acid and glycerol were synthesized using a deep eutectic solvent (DES) as reaction media as well as a monomer. In this context, DESs are acquiring increasing interest not only as environmentally benign alternatives for organic solvents but also as assistant platforms for the synthesis of polymeric materials with acquired antibacterial properties. In the resulting polymers, it can be observed that the use of DES in polymerization led to higher char yield (from 14 to 20%), higher biodegradability up to 20%, higher flexibility by decreasing modulus from 3144 to 2576 MPa, and more scratch resistant from 3.3 to 4.5 N, respectively. Also, it has been shown that the presence of DES salt (tetrabutylammonium bromide) inhibits bacterial growth, as tested in cultures of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus on solid agar plates.
