Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP) is an effective technique for the design and preparation of multifunctional, nanostructured materials for a variety of applications in biology and medicine. ATRP enables precise control over macromolecular structure, order and functionality, which are important considerations for emerging biomedical designs. In this study, we used from acrylic monomer (2-Hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA)) to performed modification of magnetite nanoparticles via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP). This paper describes the use of SI-ATRP in the synthesis of Fe3O4@SiO2@Poly(2-Hydroxyethylmethacrylate) (HEMA) core-shell nanoparticles, where Fe3O4@SiO2-Br nanoparticles can be used as macroinitiator in ATRP. The functionalized magnetite nanoparticles have been characterized by Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM).
