In this study, the composite of spherical aluminum (Al) microparticles in polypropylene (PP) matrix was investigated as a thermal radiation barrier. The optimal diameter and concentration of Al particles to obtain the minimum transmittance in the mid-infrared regime were determined by simulation. Then, PP/Al films were prepared through hot pressing and transmittance was measured by FTIR. According to the results, the transmittance is almost zero (0.0005) when the PP matrix contains 20% Al particles with a 2 μm diameter. DSC and MFI results confirmed that the changes in thermal properties and MFI is negligible compared to the neat PP sample.
