Thermochromic polymers with the ability of changing color in response to temperature are a class of smart materials that have great potential in various applications. The purpose of this study is to prepare a thermochromic polymer through physical incroparation of Rhodamine B into poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) matrix. Aminated Rhodamine B as a thermochrmic compound was obtained from the modification of Rhodamine B with ethylene diamine and then embedded in PAA matrix. By applying temperature, the thermochromic polymer varied from colorless to a colored form. UV-vis spectroscopy was used to evaluate the thermochromic properties of this polymer. The results showed that the intensity of UV-vis absorption increased with increasing temperature. In addition, the colorimetric detection of the sample by the naked eye showed coloration with increasing temperature. These behaviour indicated the ability of sample for using in anticounterfeiting applications.
