The main objective of the present research study was synthesis of reactive core-shell particles (CRP) based on natural rubber (NR) and their use in toughening of poly (lactic acid), PLA. CRP were synthesized via seed emulsion polymerization technique and the mixture of GMA and MMA monomers was directly grafted onto the surface of NR particles in the latex. The results of FTIR, 1H-NMR and, DLS analysis confirmed the successfully synthesis of the CRP particles. Finally, the synthesized CRP were employed in toughening of the PLA matrix using the melt mixing methodology. The maximum impact strength (~120 J/m) was achieved for the PLA/CSR 80/20 composition, showing 8 times higher impact strength than that of pure PLA.
