Estimation of Local Scour Depth around a Complex Bridge Pier-a summary of recent researches

Collapse of bridges due to scour at their foundation being a common occurrence has prompted a continued interest in scour prediction and scour countermeasures. Complex pier commonly consisted of column, pile cap and pile group. Many experiments were conducted to study effective parameters on local scour around a complex bridge piers. A variety of conditions including foundation geometry, pile cap elevation (Y), ratio of column diameter to pile cap width (Dc/Dpc), extension of the pile cap upstream of the column (Lu), arrangement of pile group (m×n), and thickness of the pile cap (T) were studied. Therefore many relations for estimation the local scour depth around complex bridge piers are available that use the different methods in this procedure. Such as total effective diameter and superposition method and etc. This paper presents a comprehensive review on scour at complex bridge piers.
