The influences of air and oxygen on the electrical energy consumption of degradation of Acid Blue 74 (AB74) dye during UV/TiO2 process were investigated. Experimental results indicated that O2 did not promote the efficiency of process significantly. The rate constants of degradation using air and O2 at optimum condition were 0.4472 and 0.4749 (min-1) respectively. Owing to the fact that O2 and air act as electron scavenger, the addition of these species should be in a proper amount to enhance the degradation of AB74. The optimal air amount for AB74 degradation was 1.2 L.min-1, whereas the most efficient O2 amount was 0.6 L.min-1. TOC reduction percentages were 55.43% and 58.87% at the UV/TiO2/Aeration and UV/TiO2/ O2 processes respectively.
