Abstract- In addition to the advantages of high stiffness and light weight structures, the fiber
reinforced composites exhibit the prominent vibration damping. In general, the mechanical
characteristics of composite materials depend on various parameters such as materials
combination, lay-up configuration and techniques of production. Hence, usually there is no
standard datasheet for these characteristics. In this paper, the inverse eigenvalue sensitivity
identification method is employed to identify the viscoelastic and damping properties of an epoxyglass
composite plate. Experimental modal parameters are extracted from measured frequency
response function (FRF) data and compared to their analytical counterparts. The finite element
mesh is constituted by shell elements lying on the median surface of the layered plate. In order to
model the damping between the fibers and resin as well as the inter-laminar damping, a viscous
proportional damping matrix is considered.
