COUNSELING LANGUAGE LEARNING METHOD AND ITS RELEVANCE TO FOREIGN LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION CONTEXT IN TURKEY
Abstract :
Counseling Language Learning is an alternative language teaching method that entails provision of knowledge, counseling and teaching assistance to beginner-level students by those who have achieved a certain level of proficiency. This method was developed in the USA to address adult language learners’ and Curran’s views concerning student-teacher (client-consultant) roles and tries to achieve a synthesis. The language learning and teaching process is analyzed in five phases. It is concluded that this method can effectively be used to teach university students and adults if teachers are proficient in both L1 and L2, physical environment is adjusted as is proposed by the method, and educational materials are provided.
