Abstract
This study has been carried out in order to determine the knowledge levels and misconceptions of 8th grade students on the greenhouse effect. The sampling of this study, which was carried out in 2011 year, is composed of 8th grade students (N=148) in the town of Ardahan/ Çıldır. As data collecting tool, a scale of 34 items prepared in the type of triple likert was utilized. The reliability coefficient of the scale was found to be α= 0,88. In the scale, items related to the sources of greenhouse gases, their effects, their prevention and their depletion take place. The data were analyzed by means of SPSS programme. The frequency (f) and per cent (%) values were examined for evaluation of the data. As a result of the findings obtained, it was found out that the students had very low level of knowledge about the greenhouse effect. Also, the students were seen that they had a misconceptions such as “the rubbish thrown will increase the greenhouse effect more”. In addition to this, it was found out that the students are also in conceptual confusion on propositions such as there will be a lot of earthquakes by reason of the increase of the greenhouse effect.
