Abstract :
In today s world, increase in the roles and important responsibilities given to individuals, and complexity of the relationships cause difficulty in being mentally healthy. Interpersonal relationships between individuals working directly with people plays an even more important role in life. Therefore, effectiveness of teachers is directly related to psychological health. This study is important in determining the level of teachers professional burnout. The aim of this study is to investigate whether the level of teachers professional burnout varies significantly depending on some variables such as gender, age, marital status, education level, seniority, graduation branch and service area. The level of teachers professional burnout was evaluated in terms of depersonalization, emotional exhaustion and personal success subdimensions. Population of the study comprised of 2007 primary school teachers working in 220 elementary schools located in Diyarbakır city center during the academic year 2012-2013. Besides, sample of the study included 300 primary school teachers working in 15 elementary schools. An inventory was used as the data collection tool. Burnout Inventory developed by Maslach and Jackson in 1981 was adapted into Turkish for the first time by Ergin (1992). The inventory which was originally 7 point likert type has become 5 point likert type. There are 22 questions related to personal information in the inventory. The data was analyzed and interpreted by using percentages, frequency, t-test and ANOVA. Personal information was analyzed by using percentage and frequency technique. ANOVA was used to test the relationship between professional burnout and age, education level, seniority, service area while t test was used to analyze the relationship between professional burnout and gender, marital status, graduation branch. The collected data was analyzed using SPSS. Important results revealed by the study were as follows:1. A significant difference between the levels of professional burnout of primary school teachers and graduation branch, education level, gender, service area was not found out. 2. A significant difference between seniority, marital status, age and depersonalization which was one of burnout subdimensions was found out. 3. According to the results, emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and self success perception of primary school teachers are at an intermediate level.
