Abstract
Novel, as a literary genre, stands out with its ability to provide extensive and detailed narrations. In relation to the events that take place within the boundaries of the plot, the novelist is then able to narrate the mental state of the individuals extensively by using different techniques. By virtue of this aspect of the genre of the novel, the reader is able to realize the state of emotions of the heroes better. Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil too is a novelist who cares the emotional state of the heroes he heroizes in his novels. Mai ve Siyah is amongst the novels of him that catches up the level of novel genre of the West. In this novel, the adventure of Ahmet Cemil who has high dreams is told in detail. Halit Ziya gives place to the emotional state of the heroes as well in his work. In this article, we analyzed Mai ve Siyah, one of the outstanding works of Halit Ziya, and tried to determine the awareness related to the emotional state of Ahmet Cemil, the hero of the novel, as a result of disappointments he experiences.
