ON THE SIGNIFICATION OF FRUIT NAMES IN THE TURKISH DICTIONARIES
Abstract :
Written language dictionaries are, in essence, dictionaries for the common language based on one dialect or accent and primarily take the usage meaning of live words as their basis. These dictionaries both contribute to the correct comprehension, writing and speech of the society and are shaped according to the production and usage of the society. Therefore, the first meaning of a word in the dictionaries in question is the first meaning which is understood by the society when the word is uttered without context. The presentation of a meaning which has not been adopted by the society as the first meaning of a word and presentation of a meaning which has been adopted by the society as the second meaning is a problematic situation for a study aimed to contribute to the social communication. In the presentation of fruit names in the primary written language dictionaries of Turkish, such a problem is observed. Generally, the first meanings of fruit names are provided as trees and the second meanings as fruits. In this study, first the notions of fruit, tree and shrub are clarified then the topics of in what way the words in question have been significated in primary Turkish dictionaries and how they should be significated in Turkish dictionaries are elaborated on.
