    The Effect of the Parents’ Attitudes on University Students’ Problem-Solving Skills, Social Concerns and Academic Achievement

  • Abstract
    In this study, the effect of the parents’ attitudes on university students’ problem-solving skills, social concerns and academic achievement were investigated. The population of study was university students studying at the University of Harran during 2010-2011 academic year. The sample consisted of students attending the Faculty of Education and Science and Literature in this university. A questionnaire was used to collect data. In order to determine the level of social anxiety, a Social Anxiety Scale, for problemsolving skills a Problem Solving Inventory” and to determine the effect of students’ parents educational level and their attitudes on students’ academic achievement a Personal Information Form which was developed by the researcher was used. The data were analyzed with the SPSS 16.0 program. While analyzing the data Kruskal-Wallis H, One Way Anova tests were used. The results of the study indicated that students’ shoving higher academic achievement, problem solving skills and lower social anxiety have parents with higher education and more democratic attitudes toward their children. In addition, children having parents with inconsistent and careless attitudes were found low problem-solving skill, low academic achievement and high levels of social anxiety. Moreover, children having parents’ with authoritarian attitude were found high academic achievement level and high social anxiety. Lastly, children having parents’ with protective attitude were found low problem-solving skills.
