Students’ Views about Project-Based Learning Approach in Statistics Teaching
Abstract :
The principles of effective social studies teaching and learning can be met by many different approaches. One of the most effective methods is project-based learning. The aim of this study is to analyze students’ views appeared in using project based learning approach, which lead students to learn statistics. Case study model was used in the study. Project based learning applied to total 35 students studying at 8th grade classes of a middle school in Trabzon during 2011-2012 school year. In order to take students’ views about learning with project based learning, semi-structured interviews were conducted with six of the sample. Also the student logs, self-assessment form, and observations were used. The data obtained were analyzed descriptively-interpretive approach. In this context, the data read over and over again to reveal themes. The results of the study revealed that students’ views towards statistics were changed in a positive manner and students found project based learning approach very effective. In addition, data showed that these activities helped students gain confidence about mathematics. Therefore, it’s recommended to use the project based learning during statistics course in mathematics classes.
