Abstract :
The main purpose of this research is to comparatively analyze the perception of Ottomans in the social studies textbooks used in the 6th and 7th grades of the Turkish education system and that in the social studies textbooks used in the corresponding grades of the Egyptian education system – grade1 class 6 and grade 2 class1 – for the 2007-2008 academic year. In this context, the main focus is to determine the similarities and differences between these books in terms of the perception of Ottomans. Qualitative procedures are employed in the study. Data were collected by using the document analysis technique and were analyzed with content analysis. The study suggests that the Turkish books used a more objective rhetoric compared to their Egyptian counterparts and that the expressions in the Turkish books are mostly neutral, rather than positive, while the Egyptian books used a completely negative rhetoric.
