An Analysis of Video Game Addiction Levels Among Secondary School Students According to Several Variables
Abstract :
Games are important means in children’s development. While games used to be mostly outdoor activities enjoyed with friends, they are in the form of cyber activities taking place in front of computers now. Aiming to determine the video game addiction level among various demographic features, this study was carried out on 146 students, who were continuing their education at 6th, 7th or 8th grades in an secondary school in Ankara. According to the results of the research, which used screening model, game addiction scores are affected by some variables such as gender, educational level of parents and duration of playing games, whereas owing a computer has no effect on them. For game addiction, an emphasis was laid on the situation against male students, parents with high level of education and students playing games for more than 3 hours per day. It is recommended that further research be conducted in relation to the variation of game addiction by individual characteristics, the effects of various types of games on addiction, aggressive behaviors and other effects of the games, protection from addiction and the treatment of addiction.
