Abstract :
The purpose of the current study is to investigate the effect of applications conducted in Oral Expression Course on pre-service teachers’ speaking anxiety. The study carried out through Single Group Pretest – Posttest Model with the participation of 212 pre-service teachers in 2013-2014 school year. As data collection instruments, two-category questions developed by the researchers and “Pre-service Teachers’ Speaking Anxiety Scale” developed by Sevim (2012) were used. The pre-service teachers’ speaking anxiety levels before and after the applications conducted in Oral Expression Course were compared in terms of gender and the department they attend. The findings of the study revealed that there was an increase on the positive opinions of the pre-service teachers about correct and fluent speaking of Turkish and making speech in front of people. Following the applications performed in Oral Expression Course, a decrease was observed in the speaking anxiety levels of the pre-service teachers. When the results obtained after the applications were compared in relation to gender variable, it was found that the females’ anxiety level is lower than that of the males. Moreover, it was found that the pre-service teachers from the department of pre-school teaching have lower anxiety level when compared to the pre-service teachers from other departments.
