Abstract :
It is stated out in the studies in the literature conducted that students’ knowledge about the concepts on environment education are missing and/or their knowledge about concepts are few, that they do not know the meaning of the concepts exactly and that they do not perceive these concepts. Also in this study, in order to reveal the reasons of these missing in the literature, defining the level of understanding of secondary school students on concepts about environment education is aimed. Scanning method is used in the study. Sample is composed of total 650 students from 6th, 7th and 8th class students whom they are studying at central secondary schools in Gumushane. In direction with the aim of the study, three open ended questions developed by the researcher is utilized. At the end of the applications, frequencies of the answers gathered through open-ended questions are defined. At last, it is tried to be discussed why the students’ knowledge on concepts about environmental education are missing. In order that the concepts included in environment education can be more effective, activities about environment education are needed to be applied in schools. Various suggestions are made about students’ the levels of understanding of concepts on environment education give opportunity to increase thanks to these activities.
