The Evaluation of Concept Cartoons Prepared by Pre-Service Classroom Teachers in Science and Technology Teaching-I Course
Abstract :
The purpose of this research is to evaluate content of the concept cartoons prepared by pre-service classroom teachers in Science and Technology Teaching-I course from different aspects. Study group of the research consisted of the concept cartoons prepared by the pre-service teachers (N=180) studying at 3rd grade of the undergraduate program of classroom teaching in a state university. The criterion sampling method, one of the purposeful sampling types, was used in the research. Pre-service teachers studies in groups of four in the Science and Technology Teaching-I course, in which the application process was realized. In the scope of this course, the topic of concept cartoons was addressed theoretically, example concept cartoons were examined, and the topic was deliberated by holding in-class discussions. At the end of the process, preparation of concept cartoons in line with the achievements in the teaching program of Elementary 4th and 5th Grade Science and Technology course was assigned as homework to the pre-service teachers. In the scope of this homework, 44 concept cartoons were prepared by the pre-service teachers. The concept cartoons prepared at the end of this process constituted the dataset through which document analysis would be conducted. 44 concept cartoons that constituted the dataset according to the code list created by the researchers were examined in the document analysis. In the light of the findings attained from the research, it was concluded that pre-service classroom teachers could in general associate the concept cartoons with the elementary 4th and 5th grade Science and Technology course and they were aware about the format of the concept cartoons.
