Determining Perceptions of Newly Qualified Teachers about Their Professional Competencies and Challenges
Abstract :
In this study, it was aimed to determine views of newly qualified teachers about their competencies and challenges they face in their profession. In the study, case study method which is used in qualitative research approaches was utilized. The study group of the research consisted of 14 randomly selected newly qualified teachers in different branches who work in different schools of Rize, in 2014-2015 academic year. Data was collected through semi-structured interview technique. Obtained data was analyzed with basic level analysis and content analysis. Results of study indicate that majority of beginning teachers did not feel ready for profession after graduated from the faculty and however their self-efficacy beliefs were increased after starting to the profession. According to results of study, participant teachers’ perceive the curriculum as one of the main constraints about their profession. Findings of the study show that participant teachers mainly suggest that newly started teachers should work with experienced teachers for a while. At the end of the study it was recommended that teaching practice in undergraduate education should be brought more effective in terms of time and content and newly qualified teachers should work with experienced teachers for a certain time.
