Determination of Perception Regarding the “Discipline in the classroom” of Teacher Candidates: A work of Metaphor Analysis
Abstract :
The aim of this research is to determine metaphors developed by teacher candidates about the concept of discipline in the classroom. In the research phenomenological method has been used in the scope of qualitative research method. The sample of the study consists of 115 teacher candidates. Teacher candidates’ metaphors are determined via semi-structured form. In this form, teacher candidates asked to fill in the blanks of sentences such as “Discipline in the classroom is like.......”.Because......”. Content analysis technique has been used in data analysis process. Average reliability of study between these coding is determined as 98%. In the research, teacher candidates have developed 38 metaphors at total about concept of “discipline in the classroom”. Mostly, “camel jump through the ditch, keep under the control of herd, shepherding, managing the country, military service, military camp” etc. metaphors have been used. These metaphors emphasize the student control mechanism of the teacher’s. Developed metaphors combined in 4 different categories. These categories ranked based on how much they contain metaphors; categories named such as ”to keep under control, to make special efforts, to do forced things, to show strength “. Teacher candidates stated that the main purpose of discipline in the classroom is to provide classroom management. Teacher candidates have negative views about discipline in the classroom.
