Abstract :
Undoubtedly, the effects of the railways, which extend some 8697 km across Turkey and have a development process of approximately 150 years, on settlement units have been multifaceted. In spite of the fact that the matter is quite extensive in terms of time and place, unfortunately the number of studies conducted on academic level is insufficient. This paper studies the effects of Manisa-Usak Railway, which is among the first railways in Turkey, on settlement, aiming to make a contribution in this sense. There are more than 50 settlement units in a variety of sizes ranging from districts and villages to towns and cities along the railway route extending 221 km between Manisa and Usak. Only 6 of these settlement units that have been influenced by railway transportation in different ways have been studied in this paper: Cobanisa, Urganli, Ahmetli, Sart, Salihli and Esme respectively from west to east. Each settlement unit was studied individually, a variety of publications, maps and on-site observations were utilized largely, and particular focus was given to relations among settlements, railway line and stations. Likewise, brief information was provided about some general matters such as location, current administrative status and population of each settlement unit and concise information was given about the establishment and development generally in chronological order. Thus, it was strived to study the development of these settlements in unity, including the pre-railway period, the period in which the railway transportation began, and post-railway period. On the other hand, dealing with quite a large number of railway stations (6) and the concern not to go beyond the scope of a paper required it to keep the comments about each settlement unit relatively limited up to a few pages.
