A Comparative Research on Mezraa Settlements
Abstract :
Mezraas are rural settlement types that are significant in Turkish settlement literature. Their contributions to village economies besides quantity and quality changes they have gone through in time are some of the reasons why these settlements are significant. This is why, they have been analyzed in different geographic studies from past to present. In this study, firstly, geographic distribution of Turkish mezraas were evaluated shortly, then, mezraa settlements around Uzungöl (Trabzon) and Bozburun (Erzurum) were analyzed in a comparative style, and generalizations were made on these two examples.Database of the study was formed based on onsite observation results compiled with the field surveys that were mostly made in different times. Mezraas were evaluated according to their establishing reasons, settlement forms, housing types, economic activity types and their functions and effects of geographic structure on these differentiations were reviewed.
