Abstract :

Due to being exhaustible, accumulated in some areas and harmful to the nature, fossil energy sources have become dispensable. On the other hand interest in new, renewable, clear, nature-friendly and local energy sources has increased. As in the world, research in alternative energy sources in Turkey has been accelerated.One of these nature-friendly energy sources is wind energy. It reduces foreign dependency and has price stability. İt also provides employment opportunities for local production. It is a kind of safe energy that doesn’t produce harmful gases to the atmosphere that leads to climate changes. Except from construction phase, there is only running cost and dependant on productivity it may return the investments between a 4-8 years time span. With no raw material cost, wind energy is local and always useable.Although Turkey is rich in wind energy potential , there was no significant study in this energy source before 2000. In 2005, with the legislation of Renewable Energy Sources law, research on wind energy has increased. The law encourages the investment in wind energy and also guarantees the purchase of the produced electricity energy by the government. Turkey has increased its wind energy production capacity to 1805,85 megawatt in 2011, from which was 8,7 megawatt in 1999. In thirteen-year period, between 1999-2011 Turkey has increased its wind energy installed capacity to the ratio of % 20.656.As of the year 2011 Balıkesir has 422,1 megawatt wind energy installed capacity. Balıkesir’s wind energy production capacity is equal to more than % 23 of Turkey’s 1805,5 megawatt installed capacity. In Balıkesir more than 192 megawatt wind energy project is still under construction. Balıkesir is in the first place of producing wind energy in Turkey with its installed capacity and with the projects that are still under construction. Licence for nine projects for almost 138 megawatt, has been guaranteed. When these projects will be completed, the wind energy installed capacity in Balıkesir will be some 752 megawatt.
