Abstract :
The purpose of this study is the evaluation of Çan Cave in Harbiye municipality in Antakya centre district of Hatay province in terms of its geomorphological features and examination of the natural risk status arising from these features. The explanation of the activities required to be carried out concerning this issue and obtaining a place in scientific literature for this cave are also among the purposes of this study. In the frame of these purposes, what are the geological and geomorphological features effecting the development of Çan Cave? What kind of a cave it is in terms of its formation type and topographic features? How did this cave form? What kind of geomorphological originated problems may this cave cause? How can these problems be prevented? Are the required measures taken for the emerging problems? These are to questions to be replied. In the study, 1/25.000 scaled ANTAKYA-P36-d2 topography map with 1/25.000 and 1/100.000 scaled geology maps are used. The datas obtained in the scope of concerning literature and map analyses were evaluated in place with the land works. In consequence was formed in the Quaternary old young tufa stores. These cave is natural according to its forming type and secondary cave type according to its development time depending. the main rock it’s formed in. It’s among the cave group which emanated partially vertical and partially horizontal according to its topographic features. However it’s pretty poor in terms of dripstone formations. It has been also determined that the possibility of collapsing of the cave ceiling may effect the settlement areas around. In this scope, settlement plans are required to be made urgently. Besides the existence of such areas which were developed in the same formation by the geological methods should be determined and more comprehensive studies should be made concerning settlement areas.
