Abstract :
Stress which is considered as a disease of the modern society harms people physically, mentally and emotionally. What kind of measures should be taken and applied to cope with stress is becoming increasingly important today. Owing to the fact that stress can be used as a positive force in teaching and learning process only when geography teachers have personality traits that can deal with current problem, it is very important to reveal sources of stress for teacher in order to take necessary measures in advance. In his regard, it is sought answers regarding the problem statement “What are the sources of stress for geography teachers?” The working group of this study is constituted by 13 geography teachers working in high schools in Gaziantep during the educational year 2013 – 2014. In this study designed using phenomenological pattern, one of the qualitative research approaches, was used in-depth interviewing technique to explore findings regarding the question “What are the sources of stress you experience?” Data obtained were analyzed using content analysis. Correspondence percentage of the study was calculated as 0.97. The data obtained were analyzed by the content analysis. Reliability of the study was calculated as 0.97. Findings related to the geography teachers sources of stress were grouped under 4 different categories which are teaching-learning process, the teaching profession, institution (school) and personal problems. Under these categories 10 themes and 22 sub-themes were identified and in this regard some recommendations were developed.
