An Investigation of Mathematics and Elementary School Education Department Students’ Learning Strategies in terms of Socio-Demographic Characteristics
Abstract :
The main objective of this research is to identify Mathematics and Elementary School Teacher Education Department student teachers’ learning strategies and to see whether these strategies lead to a meaningful relation in line with gender, age and branch variables. The sample of the study is made up of the student teachers from the Education Faculty, Primary School Mathematics Teaching Departments of Gazi and Mersin Universities (237 participants) and the students from the Science and Letters Faculty, Mathematics Department of Çukurova University (83 participants) and from the Education Faculty, Elementary School Education Department of Çukurova University (177 participants). The data of this research is based on a specific part of “Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ)”, which is called “Learning Strategies Scale”. The findings change according to the departments. The overall results indicate that student teaches use learning strategies at a moderate level and female participants tend to use learning strategies more than their male counterparts. Also, it is found that the use of learning strategies does not differ according to the age factor.
