Self-esteem and Resilience as the Predictors of Loneliness among University Students

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate self-esteem and resilience as predictors of loneliness. To pursue this goal, UCLA Loneliness Inventory, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Inventory and Ego-Resilience Scale were administered to 410 students (296 females, 114 males) who were studying in Education Faculty of Kocaeli University. Pearson correlation coefficients were used to examine the relationships between criterion (loneliness) and predictor (self-esteem and resilience) variables. Multiple regression analyses were run to evaluate how well self-esteem and resilience predicted loneliness. Results showed there is a negative relationship between loneliness and self-esteem and resilience. It was also found that self-esteem and resilience were important predictors of loneliness.
