Teacher Candidates’ Misconceptions Relating Basic Ecology Concepts and Environmental Problems
Abstract :
The purpose of this research is to reveal misconceptions of teacher candidates relating basic ecology concepts and environmental problems. Within this scope, we tried to obtain data as much as possible by using survey method. 158 teacher candidates from KTU Fatih Education Faculty who are second year students in Department of Primary Education Classroom Teaching participated in the research in 2008-2009 academic year. Two-tier concept achievement test consisting 20 questions and 3 open-ended questions, developed by the researchers was used in order to reveal misconceptions of teacher candidates relating basic ecology concepts and environmental problems. After the evaluation of theconcept achievement test, a form was developed consisting open-ended questions to make an in-depth analysis on wrong and uncertain expressions of teacher candidates related to questions asked in the test. We used SPSS.15 packet software to analyze concept achievement test, while we used content analysis to analyze written texts and open-ended questions. It was revealed that teacher candidates have misconceptions especially about the causes and results of energy pyramid, biomass, food web, food chain, greenhouse effect, acid rain and ozone depletion.
