Abstract :
In this study, “The Need For Social Approval Scale” was developed. In order to identify the psychometric features of the Need For Social Approval Scale, a pilot study was carried out with 100 students at Amasya University, Faculty of Education, and then exploratory factor analysis was applied to the data obtained from 360 university students. Confirmatory factor analysis was applied to the data obtained from 265 university students. As a result of the exploratory factor analysis, a structure of three sub-dimensions was found out. It was seen that three dimensions of the scale explain 45% of the total variance. The first of those dimensions is named as sensitivity to others’ judgments, the second is social withdrawal, and the third is leaving a good impression. High scores in the scale show the increase of the need for social approval. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis validate the scale’s having a structure of three sub-dimensions. ( x²/sd= 2.11, RMSEA= .06, NNFI= .94, CFI= .95, RMR= .06, NFI= .90, IFI= .95). It was found that the Coefficient of internal consistence is .83 for sensitivity to others’ judgments, .80 for social withdrawal, and .80 for is leaving a good impression. The Coefficient of internal consistence for the scale in general is .90. Test – retest method was applied with a two-week interval and a high correlation of .90 was found between the two applications. A high correlation of .79 was found between the Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale and Need for Social Approval Scale
