The Predictive Power of Ego States on Attachment Styles in Teacher Candidates
Abstract :
The purpose of this study was to examine the predictive power of ego states on attachment styles in teacher candidates. The descriptive survey model was used in the study. The participants were 340 undergraduate students (249 female, 91 male) studying in different majors at the Faculty of Education in Pamukkale University. Ego States and Attachment Patterns Scales were used to gather the data. Pearson correlation and linear regression analyses were performed to analyze the data. Results showed that secure attachment style was positively related with adult and natural child and negatively with rebellious child ego states; fearful attachment style was positively related with golden and rebellious child and negatively with nurturing parent ego states; preoccupied attachment style was positively related with natural, golden and rebellious child and negatively with adult ego states; dismissing attachment style was positively related with critical parent, natural, golden and rebellious child and negatively with nurturing parent ego states. Moreover, regression analyses show that adult, natural and rebellious child ego states predict secure attachment style; golden and rebellious child ego states predict fearful attachment style; adult, natural and golden child ego states predict preoccupied attachment style; nurturing parents and rebellious child ego states predict dismissing attachment style. Implications of the findings were discussed and further suggestions were given for the educators
