The Use of Three Dimensional Printing Technologies in Education: Practices in Turkey

The main objective of this present study is to introduce 3 dimensional (3D) printing technologies, explain its relation with education and investigate how it has been applied in our country. There has been a growing interest in the field of education towards 3 dimensional printing technologies, which are commonly used in so many fields like medicine, architecture. There are 3D printers which allow the models in digital media to be produced as a concrete object though the use of many raw materials such as plastic, modeling clay and metal. Besides, among 3D printing technologies, there are 3D design software, 3D scanners and 3D ink (filaments). 3D printers have appeared to be in the focus of 3D printing technologies, which hold a large ecosystem, hosting so many different products. 3D printers provide the opportunities of saving on time and expenditure, privacy and security, geometric independence and being environmentally friendly. However, the limitation of raw material, high cost and durability should be considered. The study explains in which institutions and for what purposes, especially in our country, the 3D printing technologies are applied. Furthermore, in the study, some recommendations are presented on how to use 3D printing technologies in the field of education.
