Abstract :
Between 1.5 and 2 million people worldwide are believed to keep marine aquaria. Approximately 1.500 fish species are traded worldwide with the best estimate of annual global trade ranging between 20 and 24 million individuals. Unlike freshwater aquaria species, where 90 percent of fish species are currently farmed, 95 percent of marine aquaria are stocked from wild caught species. Marine aquarium hobby in Turkey started to develop as professional after 2000s. After this period, a large number and type of marine aquarium fish have been started to import. In tropical regions, because of the destructive collection practices, the introduction of alien species, over-harvesting, the lack of scientific information for many species collected and the threat of extinction of target species have raised interest about the native marine species on aquarium trade. There are more than 500 native marine fish species in Turkish seas. In terms of biological and ecological characteristics of 70 native osteichtyes marine fish species in Turkey are determined suitable for marine aquariums. Information about the species is given. These species are thought to bring in native species to the marine aquarium industry.
