Title Of Article :
Determining escape mortality of red bandfish (Cepola macrophthalma) escaping from bottom trawl
Abstract :
This study was conducted to prove escape mortality of red bandfish (Cepola macrophthalma), which is a discard fish, escaping from different demersal trawl codends. Four experiments were performed off the Yassıca Island, İzmir Bay (Aegean Sea, Turkish coast): in two different seasons and for two years (January and September, 2011 and February and September, 2012). 15 min trawl hauls were carried out for capture to sample fish for the test and control cages. Red bandfish mortality varied between %18.2 and 88.1 for the test groups. There were significant differences between the mortality of control (open codend) and test cages (40 mm square, 44 and 50 mm diamond mesh codends) (p 0,001). Water temperature was a significant factor on escape mortality (p 0.001).
