Assessment of Turkish mariculture enterprises within the context of European Union harmonization process

This study was structured to evaluate Turkish marine aquaculture companies in which more than 100 tons / year production capacity has been examined. 130 companies with more than 100 tons / year capacity have been determined and the minimum number of companies for random sampling has been calculated as 55. Surveys were conducted with the responsibles of the companies on site. The data related to technical, economic and social structure have been evaluated. Total production capacity of companies was determined as 474,067 tonnes / year in accordance with the data obtained. It was determined that 44% of enterprises perform production over 1000 tons. It was observed that surveyed companies could not yet fully meet the criteria required by the European Union. However, company managers follow the criteria and comply with the national and European Union legislations in order to sustain a sectoral development in terms of competition in the EU market. Companies are in well progress on compliance with legislation, standards, participation to training programs and auditing. However, harmonization of the legislation and increasing the institutional capacity in the fields of nation-based structural actions, support programs and market policies are expected to be beneficial.
