Abstract :
Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the value and accuracy of fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) in diagnosis of parotid masses.Material and Methods: Data from patients who were operated on between 2005 and 2009 for parotid masses at Ege University Otolaryngology Department and who underwent (N=44) preoperative FNAB was analyzed retrospectively. The diagnostic value of the FNAB was determined by comparing the results with the postoperative histopathologic reports. Results: Thirty-three of the patients were male (75%) and eleven were female (25%) with a mean age of 54 (range: 7-89). FNAB was non-diagnostic in 6 of the 44 patients (14%). Twenty-eight of the remaining 38 patients were reported as benign (74%). Twenty-five of these (89%) were confirmed by postoperative histopathology. Of the 10 patients who were reported as malignant by FNAB, eight of them were confirmed postoperatively (80%). The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and overall accuracy of FNAB in determining malignant disease was calculated as 73%, 93%, 80%, 89% and 87% respectively. The specific histopathologic diagnosis was predicted in 13 patients and 11 of them were confirmed postoperatively.FNAB was able to correctly determine the final histopathologic diagnosis in 29% of the patients. Conclusion:FNAB was found to be a valuable and reliable adjunctive method in preoperative evaluation of parotid masses.
