Abstract :
Aim: The aim of this study was the identification of the seroprevalence of Varicella in primary school children aged 7-15 years in Manisa and to determine the factors effecting Varisella seroprevelance.Material and Methods: This study was carried out on 573 primary school children aged 7-15 years in Manisa province between May 2009 and May 2010. Two hundred fifty six of these children (46.2%) were male and 308 (53.8%) were female. A questionnaire was completed for each participant and VZV IgG antibody titers were measured quantitatively by the enzime-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. Results: The seroprevalence of varicella in children aged 7-15 was detected as 61.6%. Varisella seroprevalence increased with age. A comparison of seropositivity according to sex, parents’ educational status, number of people living at home and location of the residence did not show any statistically significant relation. Conclusion: The seroprevalence of varicella was 61.6% in children aged 7-15 years in Manisa. Gender, educational status of siblings, number of people living at home and the rural or urban location of residence were not associated with Varisella seroprevelance but age was a significant factor. Because of the high seroprevelance of this viral disease and its capability of causing severe morbidity, the vaccine which was demonstrated as cost effective should be adopted as a part of a national routine immunization programme. Additionally, further studies determining the effect of the vaccine on the incidence of herpes zoster need to be carried out.
